LADAS and the Oakwell site
The Linlithgow and District Allotment Society (LADAS) was formed in 2008 to campaign for new allotment sites in and around Linlithgow, holding the first AGM on 26th August 2008.
In December 2009, following the formation of LADAS, local landowners were contacted to seek a site for an allotment. The owners at that time of Oakwell Children’s Nursery, Philpstoun, responded positively. Planning permission for a change of use from agricultural to allotments was granted in February 2011.
Work started on the Oakwell site on Monday, 4th April 2011, with the site opened to plot holders to begin laying out their plots on 1st May 2011.
There are currently 79 plots ranging from 60 square metres to 240 square metres.
LADAS received half of the required funding from Transition Linlithgow (previously known as Linlithgow Climate Challenge) from the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF). This national funding was for projects such as ours because growing your own food promotes a healthy lifestyle, reduces energy consumption in production and transport and contributes to greater general sustainability. LEADER, which provides EU monies for rural development in Scotland via the Scotland Rural Development Programme, generously provided matched funding. The Oakwell site was eligible because it was outwith the urban envelope of Linlithgow and within the Philpstoun district.
